Movement, Mindset & Margaritas: My Life in Balance

Movement, Mindset & Margaritas: My Life in Balance

Hi, I’m Nicky. I’m 45, a full-time working mum, married with two teenagers, and like most women at this stage of life, I’m juggling a lot. Work deadlines, teenagers’ social calendars, family life, building our dream home (Due in December!🤪) and, let’s be honest, perimenopause thrown into the mix too. It can feel like there’s never a pause button. But the one thing I always carve out time for is movement.

I grew up in Fremantle, and maybe that’s where my love for being active really started, running along the river, walking the tree-lined streets, soaking up the fresh air. Movement has always been part of my life, and to this day it’s my medicine. It keeps me sane, grounded, and (mostly!) patient. Exercise is the one part of my day that’s just mine. No kids asking for lifts, no emails piling up, no “what’s for dinner?” ....just me, my thoughts, or a good podcast in my ears. (Right now, it’s Michelle Bridges’ We Have a Situation on menopause, with a cheeky side of Bec Judd’s Vanish. Balance, right?)

Here’s the thing: I don’t see exercise as punishment, I never have, and I don’t think it should feel like a chore. It’s something to look forward to and yes even when the alarm goes off at 5am 😂. Make movement something you love, and you will spring out of bed! That could be a group fitness gym (I love FITSTOP!) a walk with the dog, a run, a spin class (they are so fun!) or Pilates. Whatever looks like fun to you, lock that time in and embrace it 🥰

What helps me get out of bed, is having activewear that makes me feel good. I love picking my set the night before and laying it out ready to go. When you feel confident in what you’re wearing, you carry that energy with you, in the gym, on a run, and even ducking into the shops on the way home. Right now, my favourite HER pieces are the Perform Leggings in Cocoa and the navy (so divine!) and the Elevate Crop in White, they’re supportive, stylish, and make me feel amazing whether I’m mid-workout or running around doing my very big long list of errands!!

My Life right now - I’m knee-deep in Hyrox training, which has been a whole new beast. 4 months of some seriously big runs, workouts and hybrid sessions, that is definitely outside my comfort zone. I’m not usually one for organised events like Hyrox, I like moving on my own terms, but this challenge has shown me just how strong my body really is. My running pace is faster than it’s ever been, yes even from in my 20’s 😆 and my strength has skyrocketed. I’m learning what happens when you back yourself, and also fuel yourself well, even when it feels uncomfortable. Stay tuned, my solo race is next weekend and yes, I’m secretly petrified as much as I am excited!

And then there’s food, my other big love. Honestly, food is life and should be something you get excited about. I’ve never believed in “good” or “bad” foods. For me, food is fuel, joy, and connection. Nothing is off limits. Give me a pizza and a spicy margarita (or 4😂) and I am one very happy woman. I love cooking and am big on meal preps on the weekend to set myself up for the week ahead. This includes lunches that are both delicious and hit my carb and protein goals to fuel my workouts. It also always includes a tasty baked treat such as chocolate chip banana bread or a sweet slice that both myself and the kids look forward to. Growing up, my mum had a great ethos on food, we got to try everything without guilt or shame. That’s something I’m really passionate about passing on to my own kids,  et well, enjoy it, and never fear food.

So that’s me right now: Fremantle girl at heart, mum of teens, full-time worker, Hyrox trainee, foodie, podcast junkie, and everyday woman navigating perimenopause one day at a time. I move my body because I get to, not because I have to. I eat with joy, not guilt. And I make sure I feel good in my skin (and in my activewear) while I do it all.

Because life is short, and it’s meant to be lived  fully, authentic, and unapologetically.
I hope any mum or woman reading this knows HER worth and prioritises time just for HER 💖
Nicky xx
